Peking University Health Science Center has developed 20 disciplines that have gained national recognition. Besides, it has 1 national key laboratory, 11 ministry-level key laboratories, During the period of 1993-2004,PUHSC has assumed some national key program of different projects as "the Eighth Five-Year Budget Period Research Project", "the Ninth Five-Year Budget Period Research Project", "863 Project", and "973 Project", and has received more than 1000 grant supports from various domestic foundations. It produced satisfactory outcomes, winning 30 prizes for excellent researches at national, ministry, or provincial levels, and the publications of the researches are widely cited. PUHSC has been ranking the first in receiving research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation for the past 11 years.

Founded in 1956, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is one of the earliest established institutions of higher learning of TCM in China and the only one that is incorporated into the “211 Project” among the universities and colleges of TCM. The university has 2 first lever national key disciplines, 14 second lever national key disciplines, 10 ministry level key disciplines and 3 Beijing key disciplines. In the past 50 years, the school has trained more than 30,000 senior talents of TCM for China and over 13,000 professional talents of TCM for 87 countries and regions all over the world.

At present, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences is the largest research organization on TCM throughout the country, which has all the necessary disciplines of TCM, advanced equipment and solid scientific research strength. The staff of CACMS, in total, is over 4,000, including 3,200 professionals in various fields. Over the past 50 years, remarkable achievements have been obtained in the Academy in the fields of basic theory of TCM, prevention and treatment of prevalent diseases and R&D for new herbal medicines. By the end of 2004, nearly 900 achievements have been made, among which nearly 300 achievements have been awarded on the national and ministerial levels.
